How to Choose a Gaming Keyboard as a Student

If you're a student who loves GAMING, chances are your keyboard does double duty, helping you finish assignments during the day and jump into games at night. Picking the right one can make a big difference in both how you play and how you work. But we know choosing a perfect Gaming Keyboard might feel overwhelming and difficult, especially when the budget is tight.

After deeply studying 200+ gaming-grade Mechanical Keyboards, we have come up with a straightforward guide to help you choose a gaming keyboard that fits your needs and your budget

1. Think About What You’ll Use It For

Before you start looking, ask yourself:

  • Will I use this keyboard mostly for gaming?
  • Do I also need it to be good for writing, coding, designing, editing or taking notes?

If it’s mainly for gaming, focus on overall performance rather than specific features. But if it is the other way round, focus on specific features. Breaking it down even further, if you need a keyboard for typing/coding, focus on switch types, while if it is for designing/editing, focus on programmable buttons.

2. Understand Switch Types (This Makes a Big Difference)

Most gaming keyboards use mechanical switches, which come in different types:

  • Red switches: Smooth and quiet. Great for fast-paced games.
  • Blue switches: Clicky and loud. Fun to type on, but not ideal for co-working spaces.
  • Brown switches: A mix of both. Slightly tactile but not too noisy. Good for both gaming and everyday use.

If you're not sure, brown switches are usually a safe choice. Read more about switch types.

3. Choose a Size That Fits Your Desk

Keyboards come in different sizes:

  • Full-size: Has every key, including the number pad.
  • Tenkeyless (TKL): No number pad, sometimes also called a 75% keyboard
  • 60% / 65%: Very compact and portable.

If you’re short on desk space or carry your setup around, a TKL or 60% keyboard might be better.

4. Wired or Wireless?

  • Wired keyboards are reliable, cost less, and don’t need charging.
  • Wireless keyboards look cleaner and are easier to move around, but they usually cost more.

If you're just starting out, a wired keyboard is usually the better value.

5. Set a Budget That Works for You

You don’t need a super expensive keyboard to get a good experience.

At Vrkaa, we carefully select gaming-grade keyboards based on the quality they deliver at a given price point so that you don't end up spending your time researching about products.

There are solid options available under ₹2000-₹3000 from trusted brands like Redragon, Cosmic Byte, and Ant Esports. Look out for our recommendation just beside the product images

6. Durability Matters

As a student, your keyboard might go through a lot of backpack travel, long nights or maybe the occasional coffee spill.

Try to find something with:

  • Good build quality
  • Spill-resistant design (if possible)
  • A strong cable (braided is a plus)

7. Don’t Choose Based on RGB Alone

It’s easy to get tempted by bright colors and lighting effects. But what matters more is how the keyboard feels when you use it. RGB is a bonus, not the main feature.

Choosing a gaming keyboard doesn’t have to be complicated. Focus on what feels right for your daily routine, like gaming, studying, or both. Think of it as an investment in your comfort and your gameplay because a quality keyboard pays off in the long run.

At VRKAA, we’ve put together a range of keyboards that are well-suited for students, and we only recommend products we’d actually tested ourselves and can be graded as Top Quality Gaming Peripheral.
